Click fraud prevention works in layers. Here is every protection available to a Google Ads advertiser in 2026, from free built-ins to automated software — and what each layer can and cannot do.
Layer 1 — Google's built-in protection (free, automatic)
Google filters obvious invalid clicks before they're billed and issues credits for some detected afterwards. It catches crude bots and accidental double-clicks. It does not reliably catch competitor clicks, click farms, headless browsers, or slow-drip fraud — because Google never sees landing-page behaviour.
Layer 2 — Campaign hygiene (free, manual)
- Geo-targeting: use "Presence" targeting (people in your area) rather than "Presence or interest" to cut foreign click-farm traffic.
- Network choice: for lead-gen, consider disabling Display and Search Partners, where publisher fraud is more common.
- Ad scheduling: if fraud arrives at a consistent hour, dayparting limits the damage (but also costs you real traffic).
- Placement exclusions: on Display, exclude low-quality apps and made-for-ads sites.
Layer 3 — Manual IP exclusions (free, reactive)
Google Ads allows up to 500 excluded IPs/ranges per campaign. The limitation is operational: you need click-level tracking to know which IPs to block, and you must maintain the list daily as fraudsters rotate. Manual exclusion works for a single known offender; it cannot keep up with rotation.
Layer 4 — Automated click-fraud software
Dedicated software completes the loop that manual methods can't:
- A script on your landing page records every ad click — IP, GCLID, device fingerprint, behaviour.
